Transfering: what to do when receive rejection letters?

You're about to start the search for a new job, no doubt there are so many emotions swirling, fear top among them. Fear that you won't find a job as quickly as you'd like. Fear that it won't be the right job, or pay an adequate salary. Fear of the rejection letters, emails, calls you suspect will come.

  The thing about fear is it can be immobilizing and incredibly unhelpful when you need to be at your most confident. So acknowledge it, yes, then put it aside to get to the work of networking and searching for the best jobs to apply for. You'll need to boost your confidence because one of those hovering fears is bound to come slamming down more than once during an aggressive job hunt -- the fear of rejection. Whether it comes in the form of an email, a call, a letter, or no response at all, it is all but impossible to escape rejection on the trail to employment. Know it's going to happen, and know that you can bounce back from each rejection by learning something from each experience.

As this Experience article on Yahoo! HotJobs suggests, when you hear from a hiring manager or an HR rep that the company has decided to "go in a different direction," don't just say "thanks very much," and hang up or hit send. Take the opportunity to ask some questions. Ask what added skills or traits you could work on that would have made a difference. Ask for pointers on what you said or didn't say during interviews. Try to get as much information as possible about your interview performance that will help you in your next round of interviews, and ask direct questions about skills the employer was looking for so you can research classes you may want to take to improve your chances with similar positions elsewhere.

  Then hang up, hit send, and do something that will reaffirm your confidence in who you are. Take a walk. Get some exercise. Call a friend who will commiserate, make you laugh, and remind you of just how capable you are at so many things. Rebuild, then start anew.

  And remember this: The preparation and interviews may have led to a rejection, but the experience also helped better prepare you for the interview that will lead to the job that fits your goals and life. It may not come as soon as you want or need, but keep faith it will come. And that you'll be ready for it.

Interaction(1) and some wrong sentences

I've read all of your questions and advices plus your first impressions of me. I want say THANK you to all of you.

Up to now, no scolds appear. But I myself know there are problems with me and am trying to figure out and seek for solutions. Do be patient with me.

Things I want to know, don't ask me for too much. There are things beyond me. My being of help depends on you, your work and your advices. If you ask me like this, 'I have a problem, I do it in such a way ... but it seems to have no much effects, and I want to change it. My plan is that ... and I want you to give me some advices.", that's much better. Remember, we can solve problems by defining them, the more details we know, the more efficient our plans will be. Don't tell me that your listening is not good and you need a better plan. It's not a good question because it won't bring you a better solution.

I found some sentences which need corrections.

1.Not only teaching us how to write and read, but also listen and speak.

Here, you'd better say as 'but also how to listen and speak' because you have used 'how to write and read'.

2.what make a good teacher.

I'd rather write 'what makes a good teacher' because what might be regarded as a singular word.

3.A good teacher should make the students be happy  study.

Your former 'be happy in studying' is just ok.

4.Have some activities for an amusement.

'for amusement' is just ok here.

5.I'm sorry there're maybe some mistakes.

I'm sorry there may be some mistakes.

6.Since you haven't give us real classes...

I'd rather write 'formal classes'.

7.If so, you should make your students interest your class.

I'd rather say 'you would make your students interested with your class' or 'you would interest your students with your class'. 'Would' is more polite than 'should', I guess you might want to know, and as for 'interest', it may be used both as a verb or a noun, but here your use might be a little wrong. So I changed it into an adjective.

8.It's difficult to rote the new words for me. I wish you can provid a easy way.

It seems it's true for you, :) first, write, not rote, you omissed a 'w' and forgot that you need an infinitive here. Secondly, provide, not provid for they have different pronunciations; thirdly, 'an' easier way.

9. ...to make students likely to learn.
I'd rather write to make students like to learn or like learning. 'Likely' means probably or possible.

10. A good English teacher should have patient to inspire students who not good at English, give him or her confiendence.

I'd rather say that 'should have patience' for 'patient' is an adjective; I say 'students who are not good at' because 'good' is also an adjective. And your 'confiendence' might be 'confidence'.

THINGS FOR BEGINNERS

If you think your English is so poor as if you'd never learned it before, you won't disagree my naming you as a beginner. And this post is just written for you. Do be patient, and read the following. If you think the writing is a little difficult for you, don't worry, I've written a Chinese version for you. Just click http://learn4wan.blogspot.com/2008/11/blog-post_8628.html.

(I am writing two blogs, both about English learning for Chinese learners including myself, one written in English, the other in Chinese. The two differ a lot from each other, things I've talked in one won't appear in the other. But this post is just an exception for it will appear in both. You might know the reason.)

There are things you must know as a beginner,
  1. It's never too late to begin your learning.

    You might think that learning a foreign language is only effective for younger boys and girls, and you are just too old to begin. You got a small point there, but only a rather small one. You might think that babies are the best language learners and they can learn languages rather quick. Well, it seems to be. People think it's natural for a baby to learn languages. The truth is that it's only the case when he is facing with one single language. Put into a multiple language environment, he has difficulties and would learn how to speak in a rather late age. Mr. Qian Zhongshu and Yang Jiang's daughter once lived in France and met people speaking various languages, the result is that she could only mumble separate simple words, whatever Chinese or French. When she was surround by her family who only spoke Wuxi dialect, she began to speak.

    I am not saying that one should learn a foreign language when they are old enough. Well, age does affect the speed and learning way. But each period has its advantages and disavantages. Younger persons tend to be more curious and perform better at instantaneous(short-term) memory, their ability of imitating is also better. But it also means that their long-term memory needs development and their understanding is not so good, of which older persons are the masters.

    Remember, thinking or if you like, understanding is a very important thing for language learning. Try to use your head and figure out some useful way for yourself. It does help. Learning language is not just memorizing new words or phrase, neither is grammar analyzing, leaving exercises alone.
  2. Have the confidence.

    Let me tell you that you can master a language very well no matter how old you are, or how poor a guy you are at learning affairs. Marx began his English learning in a rather late age, and it is said that his English was as well as his mother tongue, German; Yang Jiang began to learn Spanish when she was well over 40, and her translation of Don Quixote is widely welcome as the best Chinese translation, and becomes a classic. Li Yang had worried about his English very much when he was in university, and finally he conquered it and he even learned German, the regardedly most difficult language in the world, and he succeeded.

    I myself also began my formal learning in a rather late time. At that time, I was 18, almost of the same age as you are.
  3. Keep learning.

    One can never master things he/she is too ready to quit. If you don't want to learn, God can't force to learn, neither can He change you into another man. You have problems, and you must solve it with your hands. No one can replace you. You NEED to be willing to learn.

    Works won't be done without a beginnig, girls won't be got without you pursuit. You want a Great Wall? Then you must begin your laying bricks. I've told you that method is important, but method itself can't save you if you won't make any efforts.
  4. Solutions are always much more than problems.

    Yes, you are right. I am talking about learning methods, but not too many. I am still encourageing you that things are not so serious as you are imagining. If you are willing to learn and do have confidence with yourself and your teacher, you just can defeat the difficulties one by one, or group by group. What you need to do now is to raise your head up high and give yourself to big smile, then cheer up, go to have a bath or a basketball match, after that, open your English book, give her a sneer. Just tell her that you will beat her.
  5. Always summarize and review.

    Sometimes it is very easy to see why you can't make more progress. I know you hear of the story of the corn-bear. he just keeps get new corns, whenever he gets a new ear, he simply drops the old one. he works all day, but all he gets is only one ear. Learning is like the same. Review helps you to restore you corn you've obtained. Just don't let go those you've learned, then however slow you are, you ARE progressing.

    These simple things can keep you move forward. Simple as they are, really powerful they are, too.

Thinking of change

Though it's only the first week to spend with these students, it seems
I meet problems. This morning, my way just would work. Some students
just won't learn, they did no preparation work. I hope by some vivid
activities and explanation, they could just learn something, but I
need others' help, and the others, either, couldn't understand the
text very well. Time always flies, and my supposed finished work
remain unfinished.

Planned to do a research, something like a questionaire, yesterday,
and busy on it. This morning, trying to get something out of the
academic secretry. But she was too busy to offer me time. And I will
go to her in some other time. Anyway, my plan needs more improvements.

Called Miss Liu, their former teacher, and asked some questions. She
patiently replied. We talked for a very long time, too long for her
health. I just want to tell her, I won't fail her hope and treat her
boys and girls really, really good. But she seems to have a rather
different idea from mine. She must have got bored by always keeping
'nudging' them to learn. There are always difficult students.

I don't want to leave alone any of my students. Boys or girls, older
or younger, active or inactive, with better performances or with less
better performances, they are the same in my eyes. 'Poor' guys need
encouragement and love, so do the 'rich/good' guys. They all need
care, 'carress', kind words and soft training. They need respect, and
I respect them. I won't 'teach' them how to do, I would just help them
to go their own way more smoothly. They are growing up, so am I.

There are still 'buts', too many buts. I just won't let the buts to
stop me. Methods are always much more than ploblems. So I have the
confidence.

I will change my strategy, but my hope and my goal remain the same. I
hope my students would pass me someday, and I want them to be the
excellent students. English isn't everything, but quality and
personality are.

to Students: Things you might want to know of me,

1. I’m a teacher and will take my job seriously. But it also means I will only do my own job and am unwilling to do yours.
2. I’m kind and ready to respect others. I’m easy to get whenever you need me.
3. I’m stubborn and inflexible, which means I’d like stick to rules. So, try not to threaten me for a higher score by saying that you won’t choose me as your English teacher in the next term. It just won’t work.
4. I won’t explain everything in class, but I like to help solving problems. So, don’t expect me of treating every question you think important in the class, you can ask for my help in other times, or you can just seek other solutions.
5. I’m simple-minded, so please be frank with me.
6. I’m a Chinese English teacher, whenever you find my pronunciation or other performance is different from native speakers, just kindly point out and follow the native speakers.
7. I like making friends. But to make friends, I need responses. Your response might encourage or discourage me, which will definitely affect my later behaviour.
8. I like to be your companion in your learning journey. But it also depends on you. You must open your heart to let me know you. The more I know you, the better we can cooperate.
9. I like to adjust and re-adjust my teaching way, you can help me by keeping advising me.

to Students: Things you are encourage to do

1. learn in advance. You are encouraged to learn the whole textbooks in the beginning of a term; if you haven’t, do it now.
2. read. You are encouraged to read English books as many as possible, books including those talking about learning strategies, grammars, other persons’ learning experiences, and English novels or plays.
3. sing English songs.
4. write English novels, essays, prose, poems, plays, songs, etc.
5. take roles in English plays. You can do this all by yourself, just imagine you were someone else, sometimes a prince or a king, sometimes a witch or a pirate. You can even imagine yourself as a dog or a baby. Just make fun with English.
6. try various ways to make English learning funny and delightful.
7. challenge your English teacher or friends from English major. You can just beat them, or even you can’t, you might be able in the near future. Just have the confidence.
8. translate an English writing into traditional Chinese or vice versa.
9. play English jokes on your friends. Use English you’ve learned in movies in your life.
10. make learning plans and follow them. Just remember, your plans need adjustment now and then.
11. learn extra things. I won’t say it’s just to make extra efforts. Try not to take learning as a burden, instead, it is always interesting and pleasing. Anyhow, it’s your choice whether to make it delightful or not. If you like, you may learn more specific knowledge of the language and find it very useful. Such knowledge may include etymology (word-building), phonetics (how to pronounce and read with expression), tranlation, linguistics, etc.
12. think in English. Whenever you speak or write in English, try not to translate it from Chinese, you’d better do it directly in English.
13. repeat two to three times whenever you speak out one unfamiliar sentence.
14. make friends with your English-classmates. You need to cooperate to improve your English.

THINGS for my students

Though I have given you papers, I add something more. Here, I'd like to post them again. The lists might be growing now and then, so if you want to be of help, please keep an eye on this post and kindly advise me continuously. Thank you so much!

Things you can do and are expected to do in classes,
1) write me slips (of paper) in class whenever you have questions or advices, time permitting, I’d try my best to answer in time;
2) make faces and jokes during performances to the whole class;
3) do creative things;
4) interrupt me whenever you have questions and think it urgent;
5) slip out for a moment without permission, which means you can go to release yourselves without putting up their hands;
6) bring all textbooks with you.

Class disciplines,
1) Cell phone off;
2) freely learning environment, which means you can talk freely, but not so freely as to disturb the class, your conversations are supposed to be all related with the learning things or things under discussion;
3) being master of your own learning;
4) active thinker,whether of other things or of English learning;
5) excellent advisors for both the teacher and your fellow classmates.
6) laugh and smile;
7) don’t stand up while answer questions;
8) speak loudly while present yourself;
9) perform during the break, singing, speaking, giving lectures, etc., all are just ok.10) less or no Chinese.

My plan for future classes
a) more freedom in classes;
b) more activities (performances) ;
c) more learning strategies;
d) more open, freely discussions;
e) more interactions btw. the students and the teacher.
f) more fun in classes;
g) more platforms for communications, both btw. the students themselves and btw. them and the teacher;
h) more questions for further thinking, and which will be naturally following, more practices and feedbacks;
i) more reading and speaking (talking) assignments, which will also be much more interesting.

what makes a qualified English teacher

To be a somewhat qualified English teacher, I think one need to be

  2.  Good encourager;
  3.  Good at arousing the students’ learning interests;
  4.  Good listener to the students and can understand them;
  5.  Capable of helping students to form useful learning habits and develop their own learning strategies;
  6.  easy to get to.
  7. knowing the difference between a good teacher and a kind teacher.
  8. keeping learning.
You can just add your opinions in your comments if you like.
